En estos \u00faltimos cap\u00edtulos que hemos le\u00eddo, el hambre consume Madrid debido al acercamiento del fin de la guerra. Celia est\u00e1 con mucho hambre y leemos que todo Madrid est\u00e1 tratando de asegurar su comida. Aunque el gobierno puede por un tiempo repartir porciones de comida muy modesta, no hay suficiente comida en Madrid para todos. En vez de pagar con dinero para servicios comida empieza a ser la moneda de Madrid. Dice un hombre en Celia, \u201c\u00bfDinero? \u00a1Bah, el dinero no se come, compa\u00f1era!\u201d (Celia 289). Esto sirve como un microcosmo para un gran problema de La Rep\u00fablica: el pacto de no intervenci\u00f3n. El dinero de La Rep\u00fablica tampoco sirvi\u00f3 en el mercado internacional. Mientras tanto, Franco pod\u00eda recibir los recursos necesarios para seguir adelante en su conquista, incluyendo el control de los portes que tambi\u00e9n afect\u00f3 La Rep\u00fablica. Graham escribi\u00f3 que uno de las metas de Franco era atacar la moral de los ciudadanos Republicanos. Esto lo hizo exitosamente porque, \u201cHunger too eroded hope.\u201d (Graham 105).
